A Famosa, or the Porta de Santiago, is one of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia. Located in Melaka, it is a remnant of the Portuguese rule in the 14th century. It was later ruled by the Dutch in 1641, who renovated the gate of the fortress.
When Napolean's army invaded Holland in 1795, the Dutch released its 183-year stronghold over Malaka to the British, who eventually dessimated many parts of the city including the A Famosa fortress in 1807.
In this virtual tour, see what remains of A Famosa, such as the gate, defensive walls, and a reconstructed watchtower.
